Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and sank

Peter walked on water – at least for a moment, that is. Everything seemed to be going miraculously right. As his feet touched the sea it was as if it had immediately turned to land as he glided on top of it. But then he went down – fast. So, what happened as Peter beelined toward Jesus? In this verse we discover the answer.

“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid.” Peter took his focus off of Jesus and onto the storm around him. Fear set in as he looked down at the raging waves at his heals – and he immediately descended into the deep, turbulent waters.

We all have storms in life, and how we endure them depends on where we focus. Are we looking to Jesus or are we distracted by the circumstances around us? As we learn from this story, we need to direct our attention to Jesus, but not only during challenging times. Our focus needs to remain on what’s above instead of what’s around us each and every day so we don’t get distracted and allow fear or doubt to set in.

And if we do, when the storm inevitably arrives we will be walking with Jesus through it instead of plummeting on our own into despair.

With what challenge do you face right now do you need to focus on Jesus and his power instead of the circumstances around you?

Lord, thank you for being with us in our storms. Help us to keep our eyes on you instead of what’s happening around us. Give us a steadfast focus on you. Amen.
